January 2022 Edition The Wheel of Engagement AHS Engagement and Patient Experience have created a wheel of engagement to illustrates four groups of methods for gaining the voice of patients and families. There is an accompanying Engagement Guide available. Below are some examples of the ways we access the patient and family voice at the Alberta Children's Hospital. Patient Experience Data & Narratives at ACH Surveys to understand the patient/family experience Patient and family concerns and commendations Patient and family stories Interviews and focus groups Patient journey and care mapping Real-Time Encounters (point-of-care) at ACH Patient and family interactions with health care team Identification of patients and families to involve in quality improvement work Leader Rounding Tapping into Engagement Networks at ACH Patients and families online input and feedback through the ACH PFCC Network The Family Advisory Council (FAC) and the Child and Youth Advisory Council (CAYAC) meet regularly to consult on child health programs and services Patient and Family Collaboration at ACH Patient and Family Advisors with lived experience are involved with ACH committees, quality improvement work, research development, and project working groups. Reach out to the ACH PFCC Team for support to engage the patient and family voice. Family Digital Story This story is about the experience of one mother and her young son as together they learn to navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and treatments. It demonstrates how healthcare providers can learn to communicate with young children in a language they understand. Erica and Ben’s story emphasizes that by helping both parents and children understand complex medical jargon, they both can play an important role on the care team. Coming Up: Teens Talk Transition Workshop The next Teens Talk Transition Workshop starts on February 26. Sessions are online. Separate workshops are available for teens and their parents. Contact the Transition Coordinator for more information and to register. The Face Behind the Mask Melissa McAvena, the Family Librarian in the Family and Community Resource Centre, shared with us one of her experiences with a family who noticed the button she was wearing with her picture. They loved that I was wearing one so they could see what I looked like without all the PPE. The parents even made a note of telling their son to look at the picture so he could see what I looked like. Join our PFCC 100 Anniversary Working Group Alberta Children's Hospital is celebrating its 100 Year Anniversary this year. The hospital has many different celebration plans underway for later this year – stay tuned for more details. The PFCC Team would like to share and celebrate the history of Patient & Family Centred Care and advisor engagement at the hospital. We are looking for patients, families, and staff to join our PFCC 100 Year Anniversary working group. If you are interested please contact us for more information.
