Finding A Job

Getting your first job and earning your own money is exciting, and one of many steps towards being independent. If you have a disability or chronic health condition, finding a job that's right for you can be a challenge. There are programs and resources available to help make your job search easier.

Important things to know:

• To work in Canada, you will need a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Youth 12 years or older can apply for a SIN either by mail or in person at a Service Canada Office. Remember to bring proper identification (e.g. a birth certificate).
• While you are still in high school, take advantage of any job shadowing or career counseling your school offers.
• There are many resources or programs that can:
  • help you find a job
  • assess your job skills
  • offer supervised work situations
  • assist with resumes or job interviews
  • provide special equipment to support your work
  A few of these services are free, but most agencies charge a fee. PDD (Persons with Developmental Disabilities) does fund many of these services. For more information see the Employment Resources list.
